Our breaks by coach to the Whitby Regatta.

Whitby Regatta is one of the oldest sea regattas in the country, dating back over 175 years. Back then fishermen would battle against each other out in the sea, in their fishing smacks and cobbles, for the Whitby Challenge Cup.

Since then the event has grown into one of the region’s biggest carnival events, with the streets of the town awash with entertainment for all the family.

The West Cliff is a great vantage point to watch the yachting and rowing races, as local teams compete for coveted prizes.

Other highlights on the water include the raft races, which sees local friends, groups and businesses build rafts and compete for the title of Regatta Raft Race Champions. Down on the beach there’s sandcastle competitions, Beach Volleyball and Lawn Mower Races.

You will also find the hilariously funny greasy pole competition down by the harbour, as brave locals don their hard hats and life jackets as they try their best to cling on to the pole and reach the flag at the end. Needless to say most don’t quite manage the feat and take a tumble!

Back on dry land you will find loads of entertainment for the children, including Punch & Judy Shows, street entertainers and a fun fair. A fancy dress and walking float carnival which parades through the town is also a must-see.

Every year the regatta ends in the traditional fashion, with a magnificent fireworks display which lights up the skies above the harbour.
