In an era of jukebox musicals is was only a matter of time before the iconic Motown period was brought to the London’s West End stage.
It was an era that not only defined the sound of a generation but transformed the entire world in the process.
Learn about the man behind the sound on this brilliant Showtime break. Motown The Musical charts the life of Detroit entrepreneur Gordy, who went from an aspiring featherweight boxer to one of music’s biggest heavyweights, the man the built Motown into America’s most successful independent record label.
It provides an insight into Gordy’s relationship with each of the acts he discovers and subsequently turns into legendary artists.
But this musical doesn’t just chart his success. It also touches on Gordy’s personal struggles when the label starts to lose money in the 80s and he’s left facing lawsuits following the departure of some of the stars he created.
Of course, a musical about Motown needs all the songs and it doesn’t disappoint cramming in no fewer than 50 of his greatest hits such as “My Girl,”, “I Want You Back”, “Stop! In The Name of Love”, “Dancing in the Street,” “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” through a variety of showstopping solos and medleys which illustrates the legacy of Motown.
