Think of colourful boats bobbing on blue shimmering waters, pretty towns and villages, ancient castles, vineyards and olive groves and you have the essence of spectacular Lake Garda.
The largest freshwater lake in Italy, located half way between Brescia and Verona and Venice and Milan, was originally formed by glaciers.
Spectacular Lake Garda.
The lake has many small islands with five main ones, the largest being Isola del Garda. Situated on the eastern shore is lovely Malcesine, with its historic castle, the striking Castello Scaligero, from here you can catch the boat to many of the lake resorts including Riva and Limone.
The capital of the lake is vibrant Garda Town, situated in a huge sheltered bay with a backdrop of dramatic hills and mountains, dine under the trees at one of the many delightful lakeside restaurants, or browse the stylish shops. Also on the eastern shore is lovely Bardolino, famous for its home grown wine and olive oil and the striking Church of San Zeno, one of the most beautiful Carolingian churches in Italy.
