Since forming in Leicester in the 1970s, as a result of a merger between two local bands, Showaddywaddy have gone on to become one of the UK’s most popular pop and rock ‘n’ roll groups scoring 24 top 40 hits and spending 209 weeks in the UK singles chart.
Like many acts back then it was an appearance on talent show Opportunity Knocks which propelled their career and saw their debut single “Hey Rock and Roll” reach the summit of the charts in 1974.
Originals Rod Deas and drummer Romeo Challenger are still part of the group, along with newcomers Rob Hewins, Paul Dixon and Dean Loach.
But, whilst the line-up may have changed slightly their back catalogue of doo-wop tunes remains as colourful as their bright teddy-boy jackets and their appeal is as strong today as back then. Showaddywaddy are keeping traditional rock ‘n’ roll alive in a way only they know how.
With a perfect blend of cover and renditions of their hits such as “Rock’n’Roll Lady”, “I Wonder Why”, “You Got What It Takes”, “Three Steps To Heaven”, “Sweet Little Rock’n’Roller”, “Hey Rock and Roll” and the ever popular number one smash from 1976 “Under The Moon Of Love”, Showaddywaddy certainly know how to play the crowd and them bopping along.
