The 1940s Weekend takes place across the length of the railway, with the stations along the line transformed to perfectly replicate the war period with hundreds of re-enactors dressed in authentic gear adding to the period atmosphere.
You will see Ramsbottom turned into the back streets of Paris while Rawtenstall becomes little Germany for the weekend, complete with live battle re-enactments and replica spitfires.
Climb on-board one of the preserved and lovingly-restored steam locomotives and be joined by characters from ‘Allo ‘Allo for an unforgettable journey through the stunning Irwell Valley.
Stop off at each station along the line and you will find a full programme of activities to keep you entertained. Get your jive on at afternoon tea dances and enjoy swinging music from The George Formby Society, Paul Harper, the Lancashire bell Jane Francis and The Hotsie Totsies.
Local towns will also play host to painting and photography exhibitions, spectacular military parades featuring local cadet bands and brass band concerts. You will also find lots of stalls dotted about the area selling vintages goods, clothes and memorabilia.
There’s plenty for the kids to love too, including retro fairground rides, aircraft simulation rides, vintage bus rides that travel between the towns and lots of games to enjoy from yesteryear. They can also discover what life was like for a child evacuee as they’re asked to pack their evacuee suitcase and spend time in a reconstructed air raid shelter.
