Matlock Lights

Every Autumn for over 100 years, the small Peak District market town of Matlock has played host to a very special world-famous event.

Originally planned to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, the Matlock Bath Illuminations sees a pageant of fun floats adorned by thousands of light parade every Saturday and Sunday on the River Derwent as darkness descends over the town.

It’s a spectacular sight that makes for a wonderful coach break.

Handcrafted by the Matlock Bath Venetian Boat Builders' Association, the procession features many wonderfully colourful and themed vessels that will delight kids and adults alike.

Stroll through the wonderfully illuminated Derwent Gardens and Lovers’ Walk before joining the crowds on the riverbank to witness some sensational boats pass before you.

In recent years the procession has featured everything from the Eiffel Tower, a Disney-inspired Mickey Mouse Steamboat, a Star Wars themed boat, one dedicated to Dr Who: The Lost Episode, another devoted to Postman Pat and a Thunderbirds-themed International Rescue craft.

Every year the parade is led by a single 'candle-lit' boat, illuminated in the same way as in Victorian times, before the fun begins.

With stalls to browse and proceedings polished off with an elaborate fireworks display, it’s an unforgettable family experience. Book today with National Holidays. Use our holiday search options and book a break to remember.
