Following in the footsteps of the Full Monty, Billy Elliot and Made in Dagenham, Kinky Boots is the latest independent British film to make a successful transition from screen to stage.
Based on true events, the musical follows the story of Charlie Price, a reluctant heir to his dad’s shoe factory in Northampton, who finds his failing business spiralling into debt and on the verge of closing its doors for good.
With the factory’s future hanging precariously by a thread, Charlie has some difficult decisions to make but finds inspiration from the most unlikely source, a drag diva called Lola who is struggling to find ladies shoes that fit, and comes up with the novel idea of reinventing the factory as a manufacturer of knee high boots for transvestites.
The rest is history with the factory becoming a famous worldwide supplier of boots for men dressing as women.
Although the musical is great fun, with some great one-liners, and full of glitz and glamour the way it manages to tackle subjects including prejudices towards transgender individuals, equality and paternal expectations, provides a much grittier edge to the saucy show.
Dripping with dazzling sequins, stunning choreography and catchy score by one of the greatest female songwriters of all time and 80s popstar Cyndi Lauper, Kinky Boots is a glittering show that’s a real heartwarming treat.
