Having captivated audiences for centuries, the world-famous Passion Play of Oberammergau will, once again, return to the stage in the summer of 2020. Since its inception, this rare yet spectacular play has grown in popularity, attracting people from across the globe to watch the citizens of Oberammergau re-enact the Crucifixion of Christ.
The Passion Play was conceived in 1634, when the plague that was rife throughout Europe had arrived in the picturesque village of Oberammergau. After nearly 100 neighbours died, the villagers pledged to God that they would perform the trials, suffering and eventual death of Jesus Christ in a play once a decade in exchange for the death toll to decrease.
There are roughly 2000 citizens of Oberammergau involved in all facets, from performers to musicians, lighting tech to the stage hands, making it quite the spectacle. This poignant depiction of one of the world’s most illustrious stories makes for a truly special experience to behold.
