Cardiff Bay!
You could be forgiven for thinking you’re in a Mediterranean resort when you head down to Cardiff Bay nowadays.
Following one of the biggest civil engineering projects of the 1990s called the Cardiff Barrage, Cardiff Bay is a sparkling new development overlooking a 500 acre fresh-water lake that’s like a brand new town, and provides the perfect day out for all the family.
The harbour area called the Mermaid Quay is brimming with restaurants, wine bars and loads of attractions for kids too. The terraces provide the perfect spot for a lazy lunch or coffee by the waterside or to watch the sun go down in the evening.
A number of boat trips run from the quay and is a great way to experience spectacular views from the water and get closer to the local wildlife in the Wetlands Reserve.
The area’s history is best discovered at Butetown History & Arts Centre, whilst the nearby Millennium Arts Centre is a great place to catch one of the hottest theatre shows.
Despite a modern appearance, the bay’s shipping heritage isn’t forgotten. The gleaming white timber church which appears to have a witch’s hat spire and enjoys a commanding position, now a café and gallery, was built to serve Scandinavian sailors who docked at the bay. It also enjoys a Roald Dahl connection for you to discover.
There’s loads to keep the young ones happy too, including a traditional carousel ride or alternatively jump on a water taxi to Penarth Marina to Cardiff Bay barrage where you will find a shipwreck themed playground.
If you’re obsessed by Doctor Who, you will be pleased to know that Cardiff bay is also home to the Doctor Who Experience. Experience what it’s like inside the TARDIS, see costumes used on the hit television series, walk the sets and enjoy the interactive exhibits.
Techniquest Science and Discovery Centre and the Red Dragon Experience also provide further options for the family.
