The fact that filming has started on the new Indiana Jones film is bringing some much-needed joy to all our lives. And the news that much of it is being filmed in the UK is even better! We all know that the UK is a beautiful country with some stunning locations, and some of these are being showcased alongside some of our favourite actors such as Harrison Ford, and British talent such as Phoebe Waller-Bridge in the latest addition to the Indiana Jones franchise.
There is a swathe of locations in the UK where the new Indiana Jones film is being filmed, including Bamburgh Castle, the Scottish Borders, and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. All locations which stand alone as great places to visit even without the sprinkling of Hollywood magic that Dr. Henry Walton et al have given them.
As foreign travel is still looking to be a little tricky, maybe now is the time to explore what it is that has drawn the makers of Indiana Jones 5 to some of Britain’s most imagination-capturing scenery, and here are some of those places which are ready and waiting for you to visit…
Bamburgh Castle
Bamburgh Castle is one of Northumberland’s most iconic landmarks, nestled on the golden beaches of England’s East Coast. The castle is over 1,400 years old and has been home to an array of kings from Henry VI to James I. The castle played an important role in the War of the Roses, has endured sieges, and sits a whopping 45 metres above sea level. Bamburgh Castle is being used extensively in the film and rumour has it that there is a dramatic fire there for Dr. Walton to contend with…
A trip to Bamburgh not only allows you to visit and explore the corridors where kings, queens, and film stars alike have roamed but there is also plenty more that you can enjoy.
Bamburgh’s Grace Darling Museum gives you a glimpse into the life of the heroic young woman, daughter of a lighthouse keeper, who put her life at risk rescuing survivors of a ship that ran into problems off the Northumbrian coast. Walk along the golden sands with a myriad of photo opportunities.
There are also the famously breathtakingly beautiful Northumbrian coast and beaches that adorn the area.
The Scottish Borders
Harrison Ford and the Indiana Jones crew have also been spotted in the stunning Scottish Borders area – a picturesque part of south-east Scotland and north-east England that straddles the border between the two countries. The area has been rumoured to be the setting for some impressive world war scenes, but there is far more to see in the Scottish Borders than this.
Melrose, located close to Hadrian’s Wall, boasts the picturesque Melrose Abbey and is the perfect base for exploring the stunning natural beauty of the surrounding area. You can also visit Abbotsford House – Sir Walter Scott’s luxurious mansion, surrounded by its pristine gardens and woodland.
Scott’s View is just a stone’s throw away from Melrose, giving you dazzling views over the Indiana Jones battleground – including the River Tweed and the Eildon Hills. The largest inhabited castle in Scotland – Floors Castle – is a short distance away, as is St Mary’s loch – nestled in the rolling hills and perfect exploring territory.
Join one of our coach holidays to Scotland and have your chance to turn into a real-life Indiana Jones amongst the majestic peaks and the natural beauty of the highlands!
North Yorkshire Moors Railway
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is no stranger to Hollywood stars. It has been the backdrop to several films including Harry Potter, Mission Impossible, Downton Abbey, and most recently, the new Indiana Jones film. A trip through the spectacular natural beauty in England’s northeast provides you with a plethora of beautiful experiences, such as capturing the stunning scenery of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park or visiting the impressive Castle Howard (most recently featured as the Duke of Hasting’s country home in Bridgerton).
There is some great walking in Newtondale, an exhibition of nature’s finest at Duncombe Park and Helmsley Walled Garden, or perhaps a visit to a more traditional British seaside destination – Scarborough and Robin Hood’s Bay.
Whether you are an Indiana Jones superfan or are just looking to experience some of the country’s most beautiful spots, why not give these destinations a go?
